Pre-Conference Session | Monday, April 11 | 1:30-4 pm
Self-directed supports are those that put people with I/DD in the driver’s seat when it comes to setting and attaining goals and deciding what their lives should look like. From the limited data we have about self-direction, we know that it can be a powerful tool for empowering self-determination and community engagement, and yet only about 12% of people with I/DD leveraging community-based supports are directing their own services.
Recognizing these competing realities, advocates and providers in New York partnered with the Institute on Community Integration at the University of Minnesota to conduct research on the experiences of people participating in the state’s self-directed services program, as well as their families and support staff. The primary goal of the research was to examine the sustainability of self-directed services: how families plan to navigate a self-directed model when the primary caregiver can no longer provide support for the self-directed process.
From this process came two insightful products—comprehensive survey results, and a 36-minute documentary featuring interviews with the program’s participants—both of which will anchor this in-depth pre-conference session. During the session, members and friends of the ANCOR community will explore what the insights from New York mean for their own prospects for supporting self-direction, as well as how they can refine existing programs to ensure they achieve maximum effectiveness and sustainability.
