Starting the Conversation about Sexuality
As we discussed in our previous workshop, “Sexuality & Sex Ed: What Every Parent Needs to Know,” talking with our young and grown children about sexuality can be a difficult task. We learned how to prepare our children for puberty, how to support our children to have a healthy sexuality, and provided skills to help prevent abuse, but do you feel prepared enough to start the conversation?
As parents and guardians, we often worry whether talking about it gives permission and whether they can be safe from harm when they are in relationships. This workshop will help you become more comfortable discussing this topic by covering what topics to cover when and the most effective ways to talk about this sensitive topic.
Goals:
Examine barriers to talking about sexuality.
Gain knowledge about sexuality and developmental disabilities.
Acquire and practice skills in communicating about sexuality with our young and grown children.
Presenters:
Beth Solá, Elevatus Parent Trainer, Yasmin Campos Mendez, Sinergia WAPT Director, & JC Cortez, MPC Director of Training & Development
Language: English with simultaneous closed captioning; a separate presentation exclusively in Spanish will follow on June 30th, from 10:30am-12:30pm. Registration for the Spanish presentation is more towards the bottom.
