Cory inspires those around him through his determination, kindness, and signature sense of humor. With the support of his Care Manager, Abby, he has made significant progress in recent years, earning the trust of his peers and support teams while growing his independence and confidence as he builds the life he chooses.
Employment Journey
Cory’s employment journey began at The Arc Otsego’s site-based prevocational program, where he developed the communication, responsibility, and problem-solving skills needed for community employment. As his confidence grew, he began working at The Arc Otsego’s recycling center, gradually increasing from one day of work per week to four.
Through his job at the recycling center, Cory has developed skills like stress management, problem-solving, collaborating with others, and adapting to a fast-paced warehouse environment. He advanced from assembly line work to operating equipment such as the baler and grinder, earning the trust and respect of supervisors and coworkers.
Today, Cory is a valued employee known for his strong work ethic and willingness to learn. His manager praised his growth, saying, “If I had the choice to hire him over again, I’d do it in a second.” Beyond that, Cory has built lasting friendships with coworkers. As he puts it, “The people who work here are like family.”
A Team Player
Cory’s spirit of teamwork extends beyond the workplace. As a dedicated Special Olympics athlete, he has challenged himself on the basketball court, competing in front of judges and spectators while earning numerous medals along the way. He takes great pride in those accomplishments, but what defines him most as an athlete isn’t the awards he has won.
Abby recalls watching Cory stop during a game to help a teammate who had fallen. When she told him she believed helping his teammate was even more admirable than scoring, Cory simply replied:
“I won’t leave a man behind or girl behind.”
Finding His Voice
When they first began working together, Abby often advocated on Cory’s behalf as they focused on his goals. Over time, Cory grew more confident in advocating for himself when it came to employment, independence, relationships, and community involvement.
“In the last year especially, you’ve been doing that for yourself,” Abby said. “And that’s fabulous.”
Looking Ahead
Over the past few years, Cory has accomplished many of the goals he once set for himself. He has built a successful work life, developed lasting friendships, has a girlfriend, and has created meaningful relationships in his community.
Cory’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when people have the opportunity, support, and confidence to pursue their goals. Through meaningful employment, community inclusion, and self-advocacy, he has created a life filled with purpose, connection, and achievement.
