Finding a home is more than just securing an address. It’s about comfort, belonging, and community. As Ellen, member at ACANY, recently shared:
“It felt really good to just be on my own… I don’t have to have anyone tell me when to go to bed, and I can have friends or family come and go. This is what I wanted for a long time.”
Ellen’s journey to independent living took time, coordination, and support from her care team, including her Care Manager Kayla. For Kayla, seeing Ellen reach this milestone was incredibly meaningful.
Stories like Ellen’ s highlight why expanding housing opportunities and making it easier for people to access resources and services matters for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across New York.
New York State has launched EXPRESS NY, a new online portal designed to gather public recommendations on how to:
- Reduce red tape
- Build housing and infrastructure faster
- Support small businesses
- Make it easier for people to access services
Expanding supportive and affordable housing options allows people to live where they feel safe and connected. Improving government processes can also help families access services more efficiently and with less frustration.
