Obtaining self-direction is worth the struggle
Since enrolling in ACANY Care Management services, Emily and her family have become comfortable with her Care Manager and others in her circle of support. This optimism has led her to consider self-direction.
As a 20-year-old, Emily has many interests and wants to expand her social circle, exploring new opportunities to better understand the world around her. Emily’s Care Manager Kelly White began working with her to put self-direction services in place.
“Emily’s family was comfortable considering self-direction services because we provided a safe space for them to explore,” said Kelly.
Another challenge
However, Emily hit a roadblock with an issue of documentation needed to obtain self-direction services. “Certain documents required for the self-directed classes Emily wished to take were missing. All other components were in place except for that piece of the puzzle,” said Kelly.
Kelly worked with Emily’s mother to backtrack through emails and attempt to find what was required. In the meantime, Kelly continued to look for dates for upcoming courses Emily could attend. “I reassured Emily and her family that this was a minor bump in the road and wouldn’t prevent her from making strides in gaining more independence.”
Solution found
After sifting through many email chains, Kelly secured the proof OPWDD required. She wrote a letter that outlined the benefits of self-direction for Emily. “I said self-direction would open doors for Emily in ways that haven’t been opened before.” Kelly happily reports that Emily is on her way to receiving approval for self-direction. “She is thrilled and already thinking about what she’ll accomplish,” Kelly said. Emily looks forward to attending community classes and visiting places where she can learn, grow, and flourish.
