As temperatures drop, heating your home becomes essential—but for many families, it’s also a financial challenge. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is here to help.
What is HEAP?
HEAP provides financial assistance to eligible households for heating and cooling costs. You can receive:
- One Regular HEAP benefit per program year
- Emergency HEAP benefits if you’re in danger of running out of fuel or having your utility shut off
Who Qualifies for HEAP?
Eligibility depends on:
- Income and household size
- Primary heating source
- Presence of a vulnerable household member (under age 6, age 60+, or permanently disabled)
You may qualify if:
- Your household income is at or below the guidelines
- You receive SNAP, Public Assistance, or SSI
- You are a U.S. Citizen or Qualified Non-Citizen
Benefit Amounts
Regular HEAP benefits vary based on your heating source:
- Oil, kerosene, propane: $900 + add-ons
- Wood, pellets, coal, corn: $635 + add-ons
- Electricity or natural gas: $400 + add-ons
Add-ons are available for Tier 1 income households and those with vulnerable members.
Emergency HEAP
Starting January 2, 2026, Emergency HEAP benefits will help households facing heat-related emergencies, such as:
- Utility shut off
- Running out of fuel
- Less than 10-day supply of wood or pellets
