Christine Biernacki is helping Michael Garing with Core Services: Care Coordination and Health Promotion and Referral to Community Supports.
Michael lives on Long Island and has done much to overcome obstacles to increase his independence. But Michael has had a recent wish to develop his sports and fitness talents further. He’s doing that with Care Manager Christine, who is helping him with health and fitness.
Focus sur le sport
Michael est actif dans son travail d'agent d'assainissement. Il vit dans son propre appartement et est très fier d'entretenir son espace personnel.
"Michael se concentre sur la santé et le sport", explique Christine. "Il veut apprendre à cuisiner pour préparer des repas nutritifs au lieu de commander chez DoorDash tous les soirs.
Christine affirme que Michael a toujours été intéressé par le sport. Il a joué au tennis au lycée et invite maintenant régulièrement son jeune frère à se joindre à lui pour jouer au basket-ball.
Redécouvrir le bowling
Christine aide Michael à se rapprocher d'un autre sport qu'il aime. "Il y a une opportunité de bénévolat pour aider une équipe d'enfants souffrant de troubles du développement à en apprendre davantage sur le bowling. Michael est un joueur de bowling passionné, et le meilleur dans tout ça, c'est que l'opportunité de bénévolat se trouve dans son ancien lycée", explique Christine. "Je me suis dit que c'était parfait. Michael peut marcher dans les mêmes couloirs que ceux qu'il empruntait lorsqu'il était plus jeune et aider d'autres personnes comme lui."
Christine says this would be a big development for Michael to be around people, giving him the confidence he needs to be more social. The bowling team is a unified sport, which means Michael will be helping kids with special needs develop their bowling talents while teaching neurotypical kids. “I know that Michael will be an inspiration to both.”
Le volontariat à l'avenir
Même si l'occasion ne se présentera pas avant l'année prochaine, Michael est enthousiaste à l'idée d'aider son ancien lycée et d'apprendre aux enfants à jouer au bowling. Pour l'instant, Michael fait partie d'une ligue de bowling avec ses collègues.
Christine ajoute : "Il est ravi d'avoir l'occasion de rendre service à sa communauté. C'est une chance pour lui d'être l'expert".
